Even with the progress made over the past 50 years for women's rights, many women and non-binary people who work in Australia still don’t get the protection they deserve from laws meant to ensure fair treatment and safety at work.
Some workers are especially at risk of abuse and mistreatment by employers and coworkers due to factors like disability, illness, domestic violence, experiences of racism and discrimination, older age, having less money, and challenges from recent immigration or temporary visa status.
By providing accessible, holistic, trauma-informed information, advocacy, advice and assistance to women and non-binary people on workplace issues, including workplace entitlements and rights, gender issues, cultural diversity, discrimination and sexual harassment the Working Women’s Centre Victoria hopes to contribute to:
- Women and non-binary people being empowered to navigate the legal system and make informed decisions about their lives
- Improving safety, health and wellbeing as well as financial, housing and legal outcomes for working women and non-binary people
- Increasing the capacity for the community to identify, respond and prevent sexual harassment
- Increasing the community’s understanding and support of workplace rights
- Achieving positive legislative and policy changes for working women and non-binary people
A partnership model
Working Women’s Centre Victoria is made up of four community legal centres: South-East Monash Legal Service, Women’s Legal Service Victoria, WEstjustice and Northern Community Legal Centre.
Our centres came together to work in partnership to best meet the needs of working women and non-binary people across Victoria. Each of our legal centres bring expertise in the provision of legal assistance services, community development, law reform, training and advocacy as well as a commitment to human rights and social justice.
South-East Monash Legal Service leads the partnership, while all four centres share responsibility for delivering services, training and achieving our strategic objectives.
